School board preparing to pick investment banker for superintendent job; May Day march in Boyle Heights

Schools: The L.A. school board is on the verge of selecting former investment banker Austin Beutner over interim Supt. Vivian Ekchian to serve as the head the district. Beutner has no experience running a school or school district but apparently a majority of board members value his business and management experience as L.A. Unified faces significant financial as well as educational challenges. L.A. Times

Court Hearing: A preliminary hearing for school board member Ref Rodriguez, who faces campaign money laundering charges, has been postponed until July to give his defense team more time to prepare. Protesters gathered outside the hearing demanding that Rodriguez refrain or be prevented from voting on the selection of a new district superintendent. Rodriguez’s school board seat represents many Eastside neighborhoods stretching from Silver Lake to East L.A.  L.A. Times

May Day: A May Day march organized by Centro Community Service Organization will be held this afternoon in Boyle Heights. The march will begin near N. Mathews Street and E. Cesar Chavez Avenue and end at Mariachi Plaza. Daily News
