Gunshots reported near Highland Park Recreation Center [updated]

Highland Park  — Police this afternoon are investigating reports of shots fired at or near the Highland Park Recreation Center in the 6100 block of N. Figueroa.

Two suspects described as Latino males wearing black hoodies were seen running south on Figueroa shortly after reports of shots fired were received at about 3:30 pm, said LAPD spokesman Drake Madison.

No victims have been found but the situation remains “fluid” as the investigation continues, according to Madison.

Twitter user Highland Park HLP said one person was seen running from the park with a limp.   Simply Informed, which tweets about police scanner reports, said  that multiple suspects may have shot at each other near the basketball courts.  Neither of those reports could  be confirmed by police.

At one point the search for the suspects apparently forced the closure of some lanes on the nearby Arroyo Seco Parkway (110 Freeway), according to ABC7.

Update @ 8:30 pm: No victims or suspects have been found, said Drake. Police did collect bullet casings at the scene of the gunfire, he said.

  1. Also from Highland Park HLP:

“It’s believed that 5 suspect were involved-gang related one suspects crossed out rival gang -believed to be the cause the shooting. Nobody was gravely injured but one suspect was seen running from the Park with a limp,”

Shootings in the park…how many innocent people could have been hit?

  2. I’m just wondering….Is there any gang prevention, gang intervention, gang suppression, education, and law enforcement in Highland Park? What’s being done? There’s been a series of gang related shootings in the last three weeks in Highland Park.

  3. Is anyone monitoring the gang graffiti on Highland Park Recreation Center walls? LAPD Gang Detail, Senior Lead Officers??? There’s been a series of tagging communications between the feuding gangs. We have three hopeful candidates running for LAPD Chief and I’d like to know, “What master plan do these candidates have to solving local gang problem in Highland Park?”
