Silver Lake — Thanks to Sandy Driscoll, we’ve been following the start of a hummingbird family on her patio this spring. She took photos as the mother hummingbird built an inch-wide nest large enough for two hummers that grew up quickly to fill their home and finally left the nest. Now, in her final update, Sandy shares photos of the mother and one of her kids going out for a drink.
“I was lucky enough to spot the Mama Hummer tutor her baby on how to use the feeder, and thus not rely on her for food anymore,” said Sandy.
A week after leaving the nest later, one of the baby hummers is escorted to the bird feeder by the mother on Mother’s Day.
The baby bird (on the left) watches her, and opens his beak, just as he did in the nest when she was about to feed him. She shows him how to drink from the feeder. He watches, tries it, and they both are happy!
Sandy said the bird she photographed are either Allen or Anna hummingbirds or could be a combo of both.
