Eastside Weekend: House music pajama party; Aerosol Art workshop; take Dad to Lucha Libre fest


Get creative with your Father’s Day plans and treat your dad to some drinks at a Lucha Libre event or bring him to an art workshop at the Barnsdall Art Park or a skateboard art class in Echo Park.

FRIDAY, June 15

Dance – There will be no facemasks and movies at this pajama party. You can dance late into the night instead at OH House Music’s A Soulful House Music Experience: Pajama Party Edition. DJs Harmony Costa and Juliet Mendoza will be spinning house music favorites new and old at Los Globos in Silver Lake.

Family Fun – Bring the kids along for Odd Nights at the Autry where you can spread a blanket on the lawn and listen to live music while the little ones run wild in their own fun zone with a rock wall and massive inflatables. The Odd Market will have more than 80 vendors and pop-up shops and food trucks.

Drink – Drink some wine while raising money for the Barnsdall Art Park during Barnsdall Fridays Wine Tasting. Bring a picnic blanket and enjoy artisanal wines and food from a rotating list of food trucks while taking in the view of the city. KCRW DJs will be spinning an eclectic selection of music throughout the night.

Lecture – Learn more about the poetry of Pablo Neruda, Jorge Luis Borges and Walt Whitman from educator and poet Patricio Maya during Poesia = Beauty, part of a poetry lecture series by Maya at the Edendale Library in Echo Park.


Art – Graffiti is more than tags you see scribbled on the bare walls of strip malls. It’s also painted on canvas and sold for thousands of dollars in art galleries around the world. Learn how to use paint markers, stencils, cans and more in the Aerosol Art Workshop with the graffiti artist known as Clover at Self Help Graphics in East Los Angeles.

Skateboard DIYThe Cut it Up – Do It Yourself workshop in Echo Park will show you how to make your own stencils and spray paint vintage 70’s raw wood skate decks. RSVP required.

Lucha Libre – The 4th Annual “La Bulla” A Lucha Libre Experience will celebrate all things luchador with art from more than 100 artists, a fashion show by designer Loretta Vampz, vendors, a live performance by Quitapenas and of course, live lucha matches featuring Mil Masacaras at Plaza de la Raza.

Sports —  The L.A.  Aviators ultimate disc team (think Frisbee) face off against the Seattle Cascades in this pro match at Occidental College in Eagle Rock.

SUNDAY, June 17

Family Fun – Make art with the fam at Barnsdall Arts Free Family Art Workshop. Mayan inspired facemasks and Ganesha paintings inspired by Spanish tiles were made in past workshops.

Comedy —  Stand-up comedians and craft beer will be served up on the patio of The Verdugo bar during this week’s Friendship Buddies Comedy show.
