Police shoot man inside Boyle Heights hospital

Boyle Heights  —  A robbery suspect is in critical condition after he was shot early this morning after being taken to a Boyle Heights hospital emergency room, according to the LAPD.

The suspect, a Latino male between the ages of 25 to 30, had been arrested Friday night in Lincoln Heights by gang-enforcement officers for robbery, said police spokesman Mike Lopez.

After being taken to the Hollenbeck Division station in Boyle Heights, the suspect said that he needed medical attention and was taken a few blocks away to White Memorial Medical Hospital. While inside an exam room, the suspect became involved in a struggle with the officers when police opened fire at about 5 a.m. today, Lopez said.

The suspect was then transported to a trauma center at L.A. County-USC Medical Center. He was said to be in critical condition, police said on Saturday afternoon.

No officers, hospital staff or patients were injured, Lopez said.

No further information was available about the shooting.

CBS2 said the hospital emergency room remained opened during the incident.
