Silver Lake’s Malo Mexican restaurant closes up for good

Silver Lake — No bueno. Malo restaurant on Sunset Boulevard closed on Monday after 15 years in business, along with its sister restaurant downtown, Màs Malo, according to Eater L.A.

The company that owns the restaurants did not explain why both places would be closed after July 30.  “We are deeply appreciative of all our customers and investors, who have shown us incredible support over the years,” the owners told Eater.

Malo first opened its doors in 4300 block of Sunset near Fountain Avenue in 2003, distinguishing itself with trendy clientele and Mexican cuisine, including carnitas marinated in orange juice and Coke, sides of sauteed cactus and onions, and tacos choices that ranged from mashed potato to  ground-beef-and-pickle as well as sugared pumpkin flowers.

Spaceland and Echo Club founder Mitchell Frank and Courtney Holt of Interscope Records opened the restaurants, the Los Angeles Times reports. Current state alcohol records say that Robert Jeffery Ellermeyer  is the manager of the company that owns Malo.

No word on what might replace either restaurant.

    Their service never matched the prices paid. Also they were tasty, but not really to justify the price. This is coming from a guy who had his rehearsal dinner at their DTLA location which was an AMAZING space. Wonder who will take over.

    • Totally agree with Matt. I live a couple blocks from the SL one and went a few times when I was new to the area but it gradually fell off my radar because it seemed expensive for what it was and kind of unmemorable. Hopefully something good replaces it, its a nice space in a great location.

  4. no great loss really at least as far as the food was concerned…..unless something worse comes along, like some chain restaurant or a soulless investor group type restaurant that seem to be everywhere nowadays…..
