Does Your Child Love School?

Students at the Los Feliz Charter School for the Arts do! Why? Because they are actively preparing for their futures, learning the skills they need in order to succeed: creativity, critical-thinking, collaboration, and communication.

The world around us is advancing at a rapid pace, parents and educators must ensure our kids are positioned to be leaders in a creative economy. Currently, the standard of excellence in education is to provide curriculum centered around 21st Century skills. Los Feliz Charter School for the Arts has been putting these principles into practice since it was founded twelve years ago. Through integrated art and academic curriculum, LFCSA prepares students for success in a tech-oriented digital future.

What are 21st Century Skills? They are 12 abilities that today’s students need to succeed in their careers during the Information Age. These abilities include:

Critical Thinking
Media Literacy
Leadership
Social Skills
Communication
Technology Literacy
Initiative
Creativity
Information literacy
Flexibility
Productivity
Collaboration

The lightning pace of today’s modern markets needs people well balanced in each of these capabilities. Every student is unique, and some excel in one area more than another. What all of these traits have in common is the ability to navigate and adapt in the information age. Each 21st Century skill is broken into one of three categories, each about a specific part of the digital experience:

  • Learning skills teaches students about the mental processes required to adapt and improve upon a modern work environment.
  • Literacy skills focus on how students can discern facts, publishing outlets, and the technology behind them. There’s a strong focus on determining trustworthy sources and factual information to separate it from the misinformation that floods the Internet.
  • Life skills take a look at the intangible elements of a student’s everyday life. These intangibles focus on both personal and professional qualities.

Together as a community of parents, teachers, and students, Los Feliz Charter School for the Arts hones these 21st-century skills in an architecturally dynamic environment that sparks creativity and intellectual curiosity. Through project-based, constructivist learning, students are able to take risks and be actively engaged in their learning experience.
