East Los Angeles — A man was shot and killed during a fight with sheriff’s deputies early this morning in a public housing complex, according to the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.
The deputy-involved shooting took place after a man was robbed at gunpoint at about 2 am. The victim directed officers to a group of individuals, who fled across the Nueva Maravilla Housing Community.
During the search, a man in a courtyard began running after seeing the deputies, said the LASD in a statement. The man was struck by gunfire as he fought with deputies after falling to the ground. The man, who had not been identified, was declared dead at the scene. One deputy sustained minor injuries and received medical treatment.
A semi-automatic handgun was recovered from the scene. However, it’s not clear if the man who was fatally shot was involved in the initial robbery, said the LASD.
