Originally built by a U.S. Marshal on a plateau above the Arroyo Seco, this 1905 Craftsman 4 bedroom, 2½ bath and 1 bedroom/1 bath guest house has an eye on historic preservation while delivering spectacular modern updates. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and feature mature, prolific fruit trees including apple, avocado, lemon, lime, nectarine, orange, and tangerine
Main house: Topped by an encompassing second floor master suite with a sitting room and balcony with downtown view, it showcases a huge walk-in closet, an expansive bathroom with double sink and shower and 6’ cast-iron Kohler tub for long soaks. Downstairs includes three bedrooms – two share a full bath and a third, an ensuite ½ bath. Kitchen with stainless steel fridge, dishwasher, gas range, LG laundry and dual zone A/C and heat.
Guest house: Garden view 1 bedroom/1 bath with kitchen, gas range, LG fridge, washer/dryer and A/C. Wood casement windows bathe the bedroom and open concept living room with light while breezy sidelights open alongside French doors - your gateway to a cypress shaded oasis.
A Home With History
The first owner of the house, Margaret Risley, was married to David R. Risley who was a US Marshal, appointed by U.S. President Grover Cleveland, from 1884-1888 to represent the Southern District of California and was also a monied investor in one of the small local Railroads in Pasadena. He was on the Board of Directors for the University Savings Bank and also was involved in the formation (separation) of South Pasadena but withdrew during the process as he was opposed to the name change, and thereby moving across the Arroyo. (The area was known by both San Pasqual and Easterday Ranch at the time.) And in addition to all that, he nabbed a few train robbers along the way!
