Supercross racer Tyler “One Punch” Evans fatally shoots himself outside Rampart police station [updated]

A man accused of domestic violence fatally shot himself in front of the LAPD Rampart police station on Saturday afternoon, police said.

The incident happened at about 3 p.m. when the suspect followed his girlfriend to the station in the 1400 block of 6th Street in the Westlake District where she was reporting a domestic violence incident, said Sgt. Rudy Alaniz with the LAPD Rampart Division.

The man was waiting outside of the station, where he was approached by several officers who were going to conduct an investigation.

Officers ordered the man to turn around. He refused and then reached into his pants pocket, pulled out a gun and shot himself, Alaniz said. He was pronounced dead the scene.

A description of the man and his girlfriend were not immediately available. An investigation is underway.

The Rampart Division patrols the southern portions of Echo Park and Silver Lake.

Update: The LAPD identified the man as Tyler Evans. Police provided more details about the incident:

“Rampart uniformed officers along with a Rampart supervisor responded to the front of the station, contacted Evans and attempted to apprehend him. Evans refused to comply with the officers’ directions, resulting in the deployment of a 40mm less lethal munition. Evans then reached into his pant pocket, retrieved a handgun and suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.”

Supercross publications mourned the retired 38-year-old racer, known for an aggressive attitude and personality. “Evans is best known for his “One Punch” nickname and tough-guy image, one that launched his popularity far beyond his results,” said Racer X.
