Lincoln Heights — A car went up in flames after speeding off the 5 Freeway and into a traffic light Wednesday night, leaving one man dead, according to authorities and news reports.

The crash on the border of Lincoln Heights and Boyle Heights  happened around 8:50 p.m. when the driver of a 2005 Chrysler exited the southbound 5 Freeway at Mission Road, driving 80 mph, according to a statement released by the California Highway Patrol.

The Chrysler drove past a red light at a high speed before colliding into a traffic signal on the southwest corner of the intersection. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.

KTLA reports that the force of the crash caused the car to burst into flames and that the driver didn’t attempt to brake because no tire or skid marks were left behind.

It is unknown if the driver was having a medical emergency at the time of the crash or if drugs or alcohol were involved, officials have said.

No information was available about the gender or identity of the driver.
