Silver Lake Celebrity Sighting! | The latest Boyle Heights gentrification fight & Steve Lopez tries goat yoga in Atwater Village

A Roundup of Eastside News & Info

Forget Beverly Hills, Silver Lake has some celebrity clout. Guess who is lurking around the Eastside neighborhood. Learn just how destructive that Glassell Park fire was on Monday. And yes, there’s goat yoga.  Eastsiders, it’s almost the weekend.

Celebrity Sighting: Natalie Portman

Academy award winning,“Black Swan” star Natalie Portman, 37,  sports a flower-patterned jumpsuit while about town in Silver Lake, says the Daily Mail. We can’t figure out where she is, can you?

Will USC and local government’s well-intentioned efforts price Eastsiders out of their home?

A joint city and county effort to grow a bioscience industry hub along a thoroughfare that runs through Lincoln Heights, El Sereno  and City Terrace is getting pushback from community activists who worry about displacement, Boyle Heights Beat reports.

The area sits on the north side of the LA County+USC Medical Center and the USC Health Sciences Campus, which USC wants to expand. The university says the move would bring jobs. Neighbors worry the jobs will go to others, while housing costs in the neighborhood will shoot up.

The gentrification fights continue.

$1 million Glassell Park fire snuffs out party rental business for now

A fire that sent a huge plume of smoke over Glassell Park Monday caused an estimated $1 million in damage at a party rental business.  The fire ripped through a two-story building occupied by Palace Party Rental. And now, KNX 1070 reporter Claudia Peschiutta tweeted, the locale isn’t taking new orders because of this “tragic incident.” Los Angeles Fire Department called it a total loss.

Kundalini yoga? Hot yoga? What about goat yoga?

Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez  signs up for a  goat yoga class at an Atwater Village brewery and discovers the dwarf goats are not potty trained.  It doesn’t matter. “I don’t know how therapeutic any of this is, but you end up laughing so much it helps you forget that you’re rapidly approaching the days of Medicare Part B followed by certain death.”

  1. Re: Natalie Portman sighting. The British tabloids often are wrong about neighborhoods. Last month they said Little Dom’s was in Silver Lake.

  2. Looks like Natalie Portman was outside of Leela Thai across the street from Phys Ed Studio on Silver Lake Blvd.

  3. Re the headline, its too late to worry about pricing Eastsiders out of their homes. They have already been priced out, and replaced by rich people. Open your eyes! No one paying $800,000, $1 million, $1.5 million for a cracker box house is merely of moderate or low income — but they are insane to pay so much for so little. And no one paying $2,400 and up for a scrawny one-bedroom apartment is modest means.
