5 free Eastside Happenings Going on this Week — From an Echo Park human rights film festival to a phoneless party at Los Globos

Who doesn’t love free? Don’t miss these complementary events coming up this week:

Animation workshop at the Center for the Arts Eagle Rock

This animation workshop will be held at the Center for the Arts Eagle Rock on October 9 from 4-7 p.m. You can work on your skills from October to June in a studio environment and build a professional portfolio with the guidance of CalArts faculty, alumni and students. Aside from classes concluding with a resume of your work, there is an arts festival for an audience of family and friends! Go here for details

Open Mic Night in Echo Park

Get the courage and showcase your funny material at the Edendale Branch Library on October 11. Sign-ups start at 5:45 and if you come late you can still sign up until 7 pm! Each participant gets 5 minutes, but you can get 6 with a LAPL library card. Go here for details

Free Halloween Concert Bash at The Blvd — IF you wear a Costume

Iconoclastic entertainment presents their 1st Annual Halloween Bash at The Blvd in Boyle Heights on Friday, Oct. 12. Death Wobble, Late to Relate, Executive Order and Sonic Ammunition are a few of the bands scheduled to perform.

The cover is $5 UNLESS you are wearing a costume – then it’s free! Double bonus for wearing one: You can enter a costume raffle for prizes! Party starts at 7 p.m. Go here for details

EPFC’s Human Rights Film Festival

The 18th annual Echo Park Film Center’s Human Rights Film Festival is Friday, October 12. Short films – examining the topic of security, citizenship, and “home” – will be screened in addition to the full-length movie, “Monger” which takes a look at the lives of three men involved in sexual tourism in Buenos Aires. Doors open at 7 p.m. with a casual reception. Go here for details

No phone dance party at Los Globos in Silver Lake

Los Globos presents – You Had To Be There – a phone-free party! On Saturday, October 13 all phones will be placed in pouches upon entering the venue. However, guests will maintain possession of their phones throughout the event.

The goal is to unplug and fixate solely on enjoying the party environment! Event is 21 and over. Doors open at 10 p.m. Go here for details
