5 October art exhibit openings, from Day of the Dead inspired photography to a Black Sabbath tribute

The weather has cooled down but the Eastside art scene has heated up for the fall. Soak in the new art, enjoy the receptions and support the artists at these shows:

Tribute to photographer Laura Aguilar in Highland Park

Avenue 50 Studio presents a tribute to photographer Laura Aguilar on Saturday, October 13th. On display will be her Day of the Dead Coffin series, produced in 1990 – the first time on view in its entirety. Aguilar’s portrait gallery showcases Chicanx artists and their friends and family in calavera (skull) attire. There will also be works features by Monica Almeida, Isabel Avila and Juan Silvero. Light refreshments will be served. Reception is from 7-10 p.m. Go here for details

Artist Fabia Panjarian opens her first solo exhibit in Echo Park

Los Angeles-based artist Fabia Panjarian will exhibit 4 new oil paintings in the exhibition “Surface Slow Deep” at River Gallery in Echo Park. Movement, flow and pattern are explored in this body of work.
It’s Panjarian’s first solo exhibition in a commercial gallery in Los Angeles. The event is from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, October 13. Go here for details

The art analyzing the dark side of religion exhibited in Frogtown

Latina-owned Cactus Gallery hosts the opening reception of “Mercy,” displaying art that explores the dark side of spirituality, religion and faith. It features the work of Ivonne Carly and Ally Burke, Gerard Sorme, Luciano Martinez and several others. The event is Saturday, October 13 from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. Go here for details

Black Sabbath immersive showcase at Subliminal Projects

Don’t miss “NEVER SAY DIE!: Celebrating 50 Years of Black Sabbath,” at Subliminal Projects. The exhibit is an immersive showcase featuring portraits from the Home of Metal Black Sabbath fan archive, historical photos, ephemera, memorabilia and a group art display.

RSVP to the opening reception on October 19 from 6 – 9 pm. In addition, there will be a special concert following the reception at The Echo

Los Angeles inspired art at the Los Angeles Municipal Gallery

Don’t miss the opening reception of “Here,” a group exhibition examining the shifting physical and geographical boundaries in and around Los Angeles on Sunday, October 21.

The works also analyze the city’s abstract and imagined boundaries and boundlessness. Some of the artists featured are Heimir Björgúlfsson, Sandra de la Loza and Gajin Fujita. The event will be at the Los Angeles Municipal Gallery from 2 – 5 p.m. Go here for details
