Switch your routine up and try learning something new this weekend. Learn how to marble a set of leather coasters at a workshop in Silver Lake or learn how to grow edible native plants at a workshop in El Sereno. Take your pick and expand your skill set!

SATURDAY, October 13
Run – Join more than 1,000 runners at Mariachi Plaza for the Boyle Heights 5K Run/Walk. Come early to watch the little ones race in the Munchkin Fun Run and enjoy a Community Health Fest. with music, art, food and medical screenings. The fastest male and female runner win a pair of round trip tickets to Mexico.
Create – Learn the traditional method of marbling at Maker’s Mess in Silver Lake. Practice a few prints in the workshop before marbling a set of cork-backed leather coasters.
Garden – Learn how to grow edible native plants during a free workshop at Artemisia Nursery in El Sereno. The workshop will be followed by a cooking demo and some small bites.
Comedy – Ride your bike or take a stroll along the L.A. River to get to The Frogtown Show, a monthly stand-up comedy showcase at the Spoke Bicycle Cafe. This month’s lineup will feature comedians Eliza Skinner and Chris Thayer. The cafe will be serving up food and drinks throughout the night.
Dia de Los Muertos – Honor the memory of loved ones who’ve passed during Plaza de La Raza’s 9th Annual “El Velorio” Dia de Los Muertos celebration in East Los Angeles. There will be two main stages with music and entertainment and an art exhibition featuring the work of more than 100 artists showcasing original Dia de Los Muertos inspired art.
Book Reading – Authors will be reading excerpts from the book “Made in L.A.: Stories Rooted in the City of Angels” at the Book Show in Highland Park. Hear bits and pieces of stories about unrequited passions and pipe dreams all set in the City of Angels.
Comedy – How soon is too soon to crack a joke at a dead person’s expense? Well, the comedians in Ghost Roast at the Lyric Hyperion in Silver Lake don’t really care and will be dropping punchlines at David Bowie’s expense in their upcoming Roast of David Bowie.
SUNDAY, October 14
Dia de Los Muertos – Dia de los Muertos comes early for the monthly East LA Art Walk. Independent artists and crafters from the Eastside will be selling their wares in a family-friendly environment. Come to shop, but stay for the party! DJs and live musical performances will provide the tunes and vegan birria and treats will keep your belly full.
Fitness – Top off up your Sunday morning yoga sesh with a cold beer on the L.A. River. The 75-minute vinyasa flow class will be held at the Pavillion of Marsh Park and will be followed by beer specials at Spoke Bicycle Cafe just a short walk down the river path.
Trivia Time — Bring your team of geeks or join a team during Geeks Who Drink at Spoke Bicycle Cafe in Glassell Park. Get ready to be quizzed on everything from wordplay to bad television.
