Echo Park’s bar scene adds two new watering holes; New York ice cream maker now in Los Feliz; “laid back rice bowls” headed for Historic Filipinotown

We’ve got the latest on recently opened and soon-to-open Eastside bars, restaurants and, yes, another ice cream parlor.

Read on for the latest issue of the Shopper & Diner Report:

Echo Park now has a Japanese-style café to call its own, Time Out reports. It’s named Kombi and it comes with a walk-up window and dine-in counter. Kombi’s focus is on hand-crafted sandwiches paired with quality coffee and tea including cortados, lattes, cappuccinos, cold brew and herbaceous, which is a specific tea imported from Japan. There’s also the Kombi Chata, a Japanese version of horchata. Kombi is at 1463 Sunset Blvd. in Echo Park.

Cocktail lounge Bar Henry is ready for take-off in Echo Park. It’s arrival was announced in June and came with the takeover of the former El Chubasco space, which suddenly shut its doors in August 2017. The space has undergone quite a makeover, according to Eater LA. Check out the updated look at Bar Henry’s opening party on Saturday, Oct. 13. Bar Henry is at 1228 W. Sunset Blvd. in Echo Park.

There’s another new bar now pouring drinks in Echo Park. Rodeo Mexican Grill has opened a small bar and lounge tucked into the back of the restaurant. Expect, beer, wine, cocktails and three large-screen TVs. Rodeo Grill is at 1721 Sunset Blvd.

Brooklyn-based Ample Hills Creamery opened its first West Coast store in Los Feliz on Thursday with a day of free ice cream.  Ample Hills joins several other ice cream makers that have set up shop on the Eastside. The opening coincided with the introduction of a brand new flavor in honor of the store, Beneath Las Estrellas, an horchata ice cream with Milky Way swirls of dulce de leche and white chocolate pearls. The location is the former office of Dr. Paul Fleiss, the late pediatrician and father of “Hollywood madam” Heidi Fleiss. Ample Hills is at 1824 Hillhurst Ave.

HiFi Kitchen, a Filipino inspired take-out and small cafe, is opening in the former Village Kitchen in Historic Filipinotown, reports Eater LA.  Chef Justin Foronda, who runs a brunch popup out of his Hi-Fi home, is expected to be serving up what Eater describes as “laid back rice bowls” with Filipino ingredients.

  1. Cafe beaujolais in Eagle Rock has been sold to new owners. Two of the crew are opening a French Bistro in Pasadena, 119 W Green St
