A renovated Silver Lake Mid Century has hit the market for three times what it sold for four years ago. The designer and photographer who co-renovated the “Long Lost Lautner” house in Elysian Heights has died. And a frequent business partner of Leonardo DiCaprio is listing a home in Silver Lake for $1.7 million.

Designer and photographer Jonathan Skow died last week at age 55 after suffering a spinal cord injury. He and his wife, Trina Turk, co-founder of the Trina Turk fashion brand, shared an interest in Mid Century architecture. That’s what led the couple to pay more than $1 million for the “Long Lost Lautner,” a small and neglected Elysian Heights home designed by legendary Mid Century architect John Lautner. Leanne Ford, star of HGTV’s “Restored by the Fords,” is selling a 1911 cabin in Elysian Heights once owned by Clara Kimball Young, who had her own production company, reports Curbed. Ford coated the interior in white paint, and added new plumbing, French doors, a Malm fireplace, a vintage sink, a Smeg refrigerator, built-in shelving, and onyx countertops. It’s up for sale for $995,000 – $195,000 over what she paid for it two years ago.
The architecture firm Design, Bitches has transformed a former Hollywood production studio into an education center, according to Dezeen. The project for 9 Dots, a nonprofit organization that offers tutoring, teacher-training and community workshops involved refurbishing an airy former production studio and dividing it up with a free-standing plywood frame rather than internal walls. “We inserted multiple layers of design interventions into the existing open spaces that embrace multiple functions and welcome both children and adults,” Design, Bitches told the magazine.
Architect Tracy A. Stone talks to Voyage LA about the issues in running a small architecture firm out of a live-work warehouse along Blake Avenue. “Architecture schools are great at teaching us to solve problems and to be designers,” she said. “They are not as good at teaching us to run a business.” As for the future of L.A., “From a purely environmental standpoint, sprawl makes no sense. That means that Los Angeles will go through some painful growing pains as it adjusts to the density.”
A 4-bedroom Mid Century has gone on the market for $5.125 million, according to Redfin. That’s triple what it sold for in 2014 when it went for $1.7 million. Architect Albert P. Martin designed the 1952 home for his family. The Martin residence has been completely renovated and sits on a 17,000-square-foot double lot with a view of the reservoir. Martin was involved in major office, hotel and other commercial projects across the country while working for Howard Hughes’ Summa Corp and later at ArchiSystems International.
A Spanish-style home with some connection to Leonardo DiCaprio is up for sale at $1.7 million, Curbed reports. Owned by a trust operated by Leonardo DiCaprio’s cousin and longtime business partner Robert Hrtica, this 4-bedroom/4.5 bathroom home was built in 1931. It still has many of the original details – including hardwood and parquet floors, beamed ceilings, arched entryways, French doors, the living room fireplace, and vivid tiling. The property also includes a pool, a fountain and an elevator. Curbed notes that at least three of DiCaprio’s other L.A.-area properties have been bought or sold through trusts controlled by Hrtica.
There’s a new wrinkle in the proposal to turn a former Texaco service station into a historical monument. The owner of three other repair shops wants to buy and restore the vintage Streamline Moderne building, and install a small cafe. “I own three automotive restoration and repair shops in Silver Lake,” Koko Bakchajian wrote to Councilman Mitch O’Farrell, whose district includes this part of Silver Lake. “I have carefully restored all of these buildings to their original splendor, including refurbishment of casement windows, etc. I treat my properties with the same attention to detail as I do with my vintage auto restorations. I have the experience, know-how and passion to do the same for 1650 Silver Lake Blvd.” The City Council’s Planning & Land Use Committee will take up the matter again on Tuesday.
