Eastside Weekend: Dani Leigh plays Echo Park; Burlesque battle; Vegan cheesemaking

Women are taking center stage – literally – this weekend with fun events throughout the Eastside featuring women in the arts.

In Silver Lake, a group of 6 burlesque troupes will face off in a sultry showdown and a filmmaker showcase in Echo Park will feature films by femmes from around the globe.

FRIDAY, February 1

Jacqueline Novak: How Embarrassing For Her at Lyric Hyperion Theatre: The author and stand-up comedian will be sharing her personal tales of embarrassment in her show that won rave reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. $8. 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Details

Battle of Burlesque at El Cid: The pierced and tattooed gals of the burlesque troupe the Damn Devillez will be hosting a burlesque showdown. Think Suicide Girls meets variety show. $20. 9 p.m. Details

SATURDAY, February 2

R&B Artist Dani Leigh at The Echo: See the up-and-coming Miami-born R&B artist perform her sultry collection of hits in an intimate setting. $15-$18. 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Details

Walking for Coffee: A Cultural Walking Tour of Los Feliz: Learn more about notable places and important points in Los Feliz’s history while stopping in the neighborhood’s different coffee shops. $65. 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Details

3rd Annual Femme Frontera Filmmaker Showcase at the Echo Park Film Center: Stories of resistance and resilience are told in a series of short films from Texas to Syria. $5. 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Details

Music to Bowl You Over: An Evening of Pizza, Pins and Bluegrass, Folk & Old Time Music: Craft cocktails, wood-fired pizzas and live bluegrass in a prohibition-era bowling alley. Need I say more? Free show. 9 p.m. Details

SUNDAY, February 3

NuTropic Dance Party at the Short Stop: Championing the idea of “sounds without borders”, the NuTropic contingent brings you future funk and grooves from around the globe for a night best spent on the dancefloor. Free. 9:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. Details

Wild Vegan Cheeses Workshop at Wild Terra: Learn how to make your own fermented vegan cheeses using aromatic plants, nuts, ashes and sea salt and avoid lactose-induced embarrassment. $60. 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Details
