Echo Park hit by water outage after pipe break [updated]

Ruptured 24-inch water main being repaired

Echo Park —  Residents across Echo Park, Angelino Heights and parts of Silver Lake lost water service following a water main break Wednesday night. Water began flowing to most homes and businesses after several hours but repairs continue.

Here’s a summary last updated on Thursday, January 3 at 11 am:

  • A 24-inch, cast-iron water main broke near Sunset Boulevard and BeaudryWater was shut down in phases as part of “repair and restoration,” the agency said on Twitter.  The 88-year-old line, which has had no other significant problems, ruptured at about 10:30 pm.  Repairs are expected to be completed tonight.
  • Only 10 customers — including a CVS store and Jack-in-the-Box- remain without water this morning. Officials could not say how many customers were without water last night at the peak of the outage.
  •  Twitter users began reporting a lack of water shortly after 10 pm.  Residents as far west as Maltman Avenue in Silver Lake reported being without water service. By 1 am some residents of Angelino Heights said water service had been restored.
  • The parking lot of the Jack-in-the-Box and CVS pharmacy next to the water main break was flooded but the store interiors remained dry for the most part, according to CBS2.
  • Only one lane in each direction is open on Sunset Boulevard near the site of the water main break, said LADWP. Beaudry is closed at Sunset.
  • The cause of the break remains unknown. But the agency’s network of pipes sees more  main breaks in fall and winter months “due to colder water entering the distribution system from the Eastern Sierra Nevada,” said an LADWP statement. “The colder water causes the pipes to shrink very slightly, known as thermal contraction, which can cause some pipes to break.”

  1. I’m guessing our not having water here in Echo Park is related to the large water main break in Chinatown. Any way to know for sure?

  2. You can extend that not having water service to Benton Way.

  3. We’re all the way at Maltman South of Sunset and no water!

  4. Ronald van Ammers

    Silverlake southern dam remains undisturbed.

  5. Water in Angelino Heights (Kensington & Laveta) running again

  6. Well this seems like a big story to follow up on, Eastsider. Thanks for all you do, and do keep on keeping us informed.

Have missed your regular updates and community engagement. How can we help and what do you most need to thrive? Obviously money, but beyond that what do you need? How can we best help if money is not on the docket?

  7. My water back on, Echo Park South. Question? Did anyone have a kind of “backlash” of water on their bathroom floor? Thanks

  8. Thanks Eastsider !

  9. I don’t think LADWP’s count of customers without water is accurate. My complex off of Figueroa Terrace is still without water and has 45 units.
