Highland Park taggers open fire during confrontation

Shooting reported on Avenue 57 in Highland Park

Highland Park  — Detectives are investigating what may have been a gang-related shooting Sunday night.

The shooting happened at about 10 p.m. in the 200 block of North Avenue 57, police said.

Two suspects were tagging a fence in a residential area near the Gold Line when they were confronted by a passerby, said Sgt. James Zboravan with LAPD’s Northeast Division. The suspects opened fire on the victim before fleeing in an unknown direction.

Whether the victim was struck by gunfire remains unclear, Zboravan said. Details surrounding the victim and the suspect were not immediately available.

A Twitter user posted a photo of one person being taken into an ambulance at the scene. However, police this morning could not confirm if the person had suffered a gunshot wound.

Detectives believe the shooting may have been gang-related. The investigation is still ongoing.

  1. Was this shooting related to the two taggers who defaced homes and private property on Mount Angelus repeatedly between 7:30-10:30pm last night?

Same time frame, motive, and just blocks from this shooting. Neighbors have surveillance camera video of these taggers. Police should investigate.

  2. Sounds like an good olde fashioned gang war. HLP gang has been tagging up and down Monte Vista and Marmion Way the last couple weeks. They were even bold enough to tag the apartment building on Avenue 57 where Dog Town gang has lived for decades. Typically, taggers will go out and hit up walls just before it rains because they get to stay up until dry weather allows graffiti abatement to buff over the walls. After all these years, you’d think LAPD would anticipate this? But what do I know.

  3. madgranny vs losers

it sickens me to see all the ugly writing these losers leave all over the city. and saddens me to see the owners of businesses painting over it and two days later it is back.
