The race to replace 14th District Councilman Jose Huizar has attracted its most high-profile candidate so far: former state senator Kevin de Leon, the L.A. Times reports today.
De León has moved from Mt. Washington, which is in Council District 1, to Eagle Rock in order to run in Huizar’s district. Council District 14 includes all or portions of Boyle Heights, Downtown, Eagle Rock, El Sereno, Hermon, Highland Park and Monterey Hills.
Huizar, who is the subject of a federal investigation, is termed out in 2020. His wife, Richelle, ended her brief campaign to replace her husband on the City Council after federal agents raided the couple’s Boyle Heights home.
The 52-year-old De León has served in the state legislature for more than a decade after he was termed out last year as representative of the 24th State Senate District, which includes Eagle Rock.
De León’s announcement comes a few months after he lost a campaign to replace Diane Feinstein in the U.S. Senate.
