Pizza & Beer: Silver Lake’s California Sun keeps it simple and convenient

Silver Lake —  Sunset Junction’s newest restaurant  — California Sun — is scheduled to open next week with more than 100 craft beers in cans, salads, sides and  thin and thick crust pizza with vegan and non-vegan  toppings.

California Sun’s simple offerings stand in contrast to the ambitious but confusing concept of the previous tenant, Mixed Company. The large “casual modern Middle Eastern” restaurant served up conventional pastries and coffee during a “fast-casual” service in the morning. Then it transitioned to sit-down table service featuring pizza and other items. The place lasted 10 months.

Not only is California Sun’s  concept easier to grasp, the place is designed to cater to the diner-on-the-go. In fact,  the restaurant’s “convenience store” structure features a three-door cooler of beer, wine and soda, cold display cases with salads and sides, and an order at the counter pizza set up.

The new Sunset Boulevard restaurant next to The Black Cat is the latest venture by Tony Yanow, whose Mohawk Bend in Echo Park also plays up pizza and beer.  Yannow was also the founder of Golden Road Brewing in Atwater Village.

“California Sun is meant to be an easy place to hang out or pick up some delicious food and beer to go,” Yannow said in a statement. “We wanted to bring a casual, walkable spot to the neighborhood with something for everyone.”

California Sun, which is scheduled to open on Monday,  is at 3903 Sunset Blvd.
