East Los Angeles  —  A carjacking suspect is in critical condition after colliding with a tree following a pursuit by  sheriff’s deputies on Monday night.

The pursuit started at about 8:53 p.m. near Hubbard Street and Sadler Avenue when sheriff’s deputies spotted a car that had been reported stolen earlier that day, said Lt. Rick Mejia with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.

When officers attempted to pull the car over, the suspect drove off at high speed, leading deputies on a chase northbound on the 710 Freeway, said Mejia.

The pursuit ended near Valley Boulevard and South Fremont Avenue in Alhambra after the suspect crashed into a tree. The suspect then attempted to bail on foot, but he was subdued by deputies, Mejia said

The suspect, a 23-year-old man, was transported to a hospital where he remains in critical condition, Mejia said. He now faces multiple charges including carjacking and felony reckless evading.
