Four new concrete tables are to be added under the shade canopies and more trees are to be planted in the popular dog park at the south end of the Silver Lake Reservoir, according to Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell’s office.
Before the canopies went up, Jen Byrne of the Silver Lake Dog Park Association had said in 2012 that “Mars looks like it has more shade than this place.”
The new trees could be a welcome relief to park goers. Joe Flores, one of the visitors to the park on Saturday, said he and his wife had just been talking about the lack of shade.
“Anything we can do to get more shade trees,” he said.
But at least one other park visitor that day had a different take.
“It’s funny. I kind of come here for the sun,” said Tim Harmston. However, Harmston notes that he generally isn’t in Los Angeles in the summer, spending that time back in Minneapolis. “To a Minnesota person, that’s why I’m here.”
Park crews also recently repaired the erosion at the park from the recent heavy rains, and have added more fountain grass along the perimeter fencing to keep the dirt inside the park instead of letting it spill out onto the sidewalk.
With these and other improvements on the way, what else does the Silver Lake Dog Park need?
