Suspect jumps into LA RIver to avoid police

Atwater Village — A late night police pursuit of a stolen vehicle ended with the suspect jumping into the L.A. River Thursday night, police said.

The incident began when LAPD Northeast Division patrol officers pulled over a suspected stolen vehicle, said Sgt. Gomez. The driver stopped and exited the vehicle before jumping back in and driving off towards the L.A. River, Sgt. Gomez said.

The suspect led the officers on a brief pursuit, at one point backing the vehicle up and ramming into a police cruiser, Gomez said.

ABC7 helicopter footage shows the moment the pursuit ended at Finch Street and Hollydale Drive before the suspect jumped out of the vehicle and headed to the river channel. He waded into the water before turning back around and surrendering to police with his hands up.

The suspect was apprehended by police and taken into custody.
