Boyle Heights  — A man was left in critical condition after being shot while he and a woman were walking down a street early this morning, police said.

The pair were walking in a residential neighborhood near the intersection of Houston and Fickett streets at about 1 a.m. when they were approached by the suspect who opened fire, said Sgt. Covarrubias with LAPD’s Hollenbeck Division.

The suspect, a Latino male, shot the male victim in the abdomen before fleeing on foot in an unknown direction.

The victim was transported to the hospital where he remains in critical condition, Covarrubias said.

What prompted the shooting remains unclear, but police believe the shooting may have been gang related, Covarrubias said.

KTLA reports the couple had come to the neighborhood to and met up with some individuals when the shooting took place.
