Echo Park  — Police investigators and the county coroner were at the Edendale post office this morning looking into the death of a man, according to the LAPD.

Investigators at the post office, located on Alvarado Street near Berkeley Avenue, could not determine how the person died, said Detective Meghan Aguilar with the LAPD. Now, it’s up to the coroner to decide if the death was from natural causes or a homicide.

Fred Contreras Jr., a 49-year-old homeless man, was pronounced dead at 5:18 am, said Sarah Ardalani,  Public Information Officer with the LA County Dept. of Medical Examiner-Coroner. An autopsy is pending, she said.

Homeless persons frequent the post office property, which serves Echo Park and Silver Lake, and surrounding streets.

This story was updated on March 26 with information from the coroner’s office.
