Storefront Report: Where did my pizza parlor go?

New Hard Time Pizza in Echo Park

The Echo Park and Silver Lake pizza scene has seen several changes of late.  First, Echo Park Domino’s pizza outlet moved from its longtime Glendale Boulevard home to a larger space featuring its new “pizza theater” concept on Sunset Boulevard. Then,  Silver Lake’s Nicky D’s announced it would close its Rowena Avenue location after more than a decade. A few week later another Silver Lake pizza joint – Hard Times Pizza Co. on Hyperion – announced it was closing and moving to a new location, reports EatingLA.  Now, Hard Time Pizza Co. has resurfaced in a new Echo Park location – the former Glendale Boulevard home of  Domino’s.

After a dispute with the landlord over a rent increase,  the owners of Hard Times Pizza, John Yoon and Ji Yoo, had to find a new location fast that would be near its Silver Lake clientele. That’s how they ended up in Echo Park in the former Domino’s location, which now sports a bright red exterior and outdoor tables. After being closed for only four days, Hard Time reopened last Friday with the same cook and delivery staff, said Yoon.

The menu remains the same but Yoon said customers may expect changes after they complete a renovation of their new Echo Park restaurant.  Hard Times Pizza, which is located in a strip mall that also includes a Burger King, laundry and a Thai restaurant, may also extend their evening hours.

“The location suits us because we can still serve Silver Lake and look to adding our Echo Park customer base,” Yoon said.

Meanwhile, back in Hard Time’s former Silver Lake location, another pizza place, ZPizza,  has apparently signed a lease to move into the location, Yoon said.
