EAGLE ROCK —  Fitness 19, which operates a nationwide chain of low-cost fitness centers, is planning to open an approximately 17,000-square-foot facility in the Eagle Rock Plaza.

The new fitness center would include cardio and strength equipment as well as space for indoor cycling and a wide variety of classes ranging from yoga and and Zumba to kickboxing and boot camp, said Bob Rodger, who will own the Fitness 19 in Eagle Rock.  The company’s emphasis is to help customers stay fit while staying on a budget, with monthly rates starting as low as $9.

“Eagle Rock and the surrounding areas are sadly under-served from a health and fitness standpoint,” said Rodger. “I don’t know that I have ever seen a community with this many fitness conscious people without a quality full health club option. Our location will be so much more convenient for the residents that will no longer have to battle traffic into Glendale or Pasadena to use the gym.”

The firm’s architect recently filed initial paperwork with the city’s Planning Department as it prepares to start work on its the Eagle Rock Plaza location. But Rodger declined to say where in the mall Fitness 19 will be located until permits are finalized.

Rodger said he expects the center to open in the first quarter of 2017 pending the approval of permits and the relocation of existing tenants in the enclosed shopping mall, which in recent years has attracted restaurants and a market that cater to Filipino customers.
