HATCH Labs features Man One mural of El Sereno biomed executive Willie Zuniga
El Sereno — A grand opening was held Tuesday for a new bioscience lab and office building, opening up space for researchers and entrepreneurs.
The developer of HATCHlabs, in the 5300 block of Alhambra Avenue, is wooing cutting edge start ups to set up shop in a former 80-year old, 22,000-square-foot furniture factory and warehouse. The exterior features a large portrait by artist Man One of Willie Zuniga, an El Sereno native who heads the nearby outpost of Grifols Biologicals, which develops plasma and protein therapies to treat a wide variety of diseases.
The project is part of what officials are promoting as an emerging bioscience corridor between the USC Health Sciences Campus in Boyle Heights and Cal State Los Angeles and Grifols in El Sereno. In 2016, Cal State L.A. broke ground on the Rongxiang Xu Bioscience Innovation Center and LA Biospace incubator, which will house and support industry entrepreneurs.
HatchLAB is designed to cater to growing startup firms that have been incubated at places like Cal State L.A.
The bioscience corridor is being championed by L.A. Bioscience Hub, a group dedicated to supporting and promoting the bioscience industry in the area. The organization sees opportunity in the many old, neglected and relatively small industrial and commercial buildings that dot the area.

Happy New Year! I'd like to start out 2023 by thanking the nearly 400 readers who contributed to our Fall/Winter Fundraiser. That's amazing! Over the past three months, we raised nearly three-quarters of our $25,000 goal. While that was shy of our target, those funds will allow us to hire a part-time editor on a temporary basis. That position will free me up to strengthen the business and ensure that you see more coverage of the communities we care about.
Of course, there's still time to make a last-minute contribution. You can do so by using the form below
Thanks again for your readership and support. Wishing you all the best in 2023
