East Los Angeles — Los Angeles County Sheriff’s homicide detectives are investigating a deputy-involved shooting Monday night that left one suspect dead and a deputy injured.
The shooting in the 3600 block of Meisner Street comes less than a week after a gun battle in Salazar Park in East L.A. left one suspect dead and two deputies injured.
Monday’s shooting happened at about 11:26 p.m. after deputies observed a suspicious vehicle that was occupied by two men and one woman.
When deputies approached the vehicle, the occupant on the rear passenger side got into a physical altercation with one of the deputies. During the struggle, the suspect pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and a fight began over control of the gun.
The second deputy ran to her partner’s aid, at which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred. The suspect was struck at least once in the upper torso and the deputy involved in the altercation was struck in the forearm.
The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured deputy was transported to a hospital where he was treated for his gunshot wound and is now in stable condition.
No other injuries were reported. The two other occupants of the vehicle were taken into custody and are being held pending further investigation.
A firearm was recovered at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
