East Los Angeles  — A teacher from the East L.A Renaissance Academy at Esteban Torres High School has been accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old student, said the L.A. County District Attorney.

Gina Murry, 33, was charged on Tuesday with six counts of unlawful sexual intercourse and four counts each of lewd act upon a child, oral copulation of a person under 16 and sexual penetration by a foreign object.

Prosecutors allege the sexual assaults took place during May and June,  when the student was 15 at the time. If convicted as charged, Murry faces a possible maximum sentence of 17 years in state prison, said the district attorney.

The East L.A. Renaissance Academy is one five autonomous high schools at Esteban Torres High. East L.A. Renaissance is one of the few high schools in the U.S. with a focus on urban planning and design, according to the school website.

News of the sexual assault investigation was announced to parents late last month. East L.A Renaissance Academy Principal Martin Buchman, in a letter to parents, said the teacher has been reassigned from campus while the investigation was being conducted.

The allegations come after lawyers last month said the school district had agreed to pay $22 million to settle sexual assault lawsuits filed by students at Franklin High in Highland Park and two other elementary schools.
