East Hollywood — The police pursuit of a suspected stolen vehicle ended in a fiery crash, prompting the closure of northbound 101 Freeway Monday night.

The incident happened at about 7 p.m. when patrol officers spotted an SUV that matched the description of a stolen vehicle used during a robbery earlier that day in Santa Monica, said Lt. Demian Wyma with LAPD’s Rampart Division.

Officers attempted to pull the vehicle over near Third Street and Rampart Boulevard, prompting a pursuit that led police on to the 101 Freeway.

The pursuit ended after about 15 minutes when the suspect crashed the vehicle while exiting freeway near Melrose Avenue. The suspect was able to exit the stolen vehicle unharmed before it erupted into flames.

The suspect surrendered to police without incident and was taken into custody, Wyma said.

All lanes of the Northbound 101 Freeway were closed until 9:30 p.m. causing severe delays, reported KTLA 5.

No other cars were hit in the pursuit or the collision.
