Silver Lake   —  Police this morning arrested a 47-year-old man one day after his car allegedly struck and killed a woman on the sidewalk.

Freddy Prieto of Los Angeles faces a felony charge of vehicle manslaughter in connection with the death of 57-year-old Christina Garcia, said an LAPD spokeswoman.

ABC7 said that Prieto worked as a janitor at Thomas Starr King Middle School, which is a few blocks away from where his car apparently spun out of control on Hyperion Avenue and then struck Garcia.  He was arrested this morning in the 4200 block of Fountain Avenue, which is where the school is located.

The victim was discovered by a person who was collecting recyclables in the 1800 block of Hyperion Avenue, according to LAPD Central Division Division detectives.

Surveillance video obtained by police showed that Prieto’s tan Toyota Corolla 4-door sedan was traveling southbound on Hyperion shortly after 6 am when it began to spin out of control on the wet pavement near Udell Court. The vehicle ended up on the sidewalk, where it struck the victim, who was thrown about 15 feet and landed between two buildings.

The driver is later seen getting out of the vehicle, inspecting the damage and then drives away southbound on Hyperion.
