Eastside Real Estate & Development News

Welcome to a digest of Eastside real estate news, development and people. In this week’s issue:

The Brick Works development in Echo Park signs its first tenant. The one-of-a-kind Cazador Castle in Glassell Park is up for sale. Cafe Tropical’s space was recently listed as being available for sale  – but that doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the Cuban cafe.

Real Estate Roundup

Echo Park

The Brick Works – a retail and residential development on the site of the old Grocery Warehouse on Sunset Boulevard – has signed its first tenant, according to The Eastsider. Coffee roaster Stereoscope Coffee will be moving in to the Brick Works and opening a 936-square-foot flagship store, according to CBRE, which represents the landlord, Champion Real Estate Company.

Glassell Park

Cazador Castle is listed for sale at $2 million – a 5-bedroom/4-bathroom, 3,923 square-foot manse on a quarter-acre hillside lot. It was built in 1928 by Robert D. Jones, whose works also include the Carl Dunlap Residence in Los Feliz Oaks and the George A. McNee House in Hancock Park.

Historic Filipinotown

A single-family home near Tommy’s Hamburgers is slated to be demolished for a nine-unit apartment building, according to permit information filed with the city. The upcoming project at 152 N. Rampart Blvd. is described as a three-story development with parking garage

Silver Lake

Possibly a bad sign for Cafe Tropical – or maybe just a change in ownership. The Cuban cafe, which has been operating at Sunset Boulevard and Parkman Avenue since 1975, and its lease had recently had been listed for sale on Loopnet.  But, after Eater L.A. got wind of the listing, the property was taken off the market. The listing broker told Eater L.A. that the owner may sell the business as-is, or take on a managing partner. A sign posted inside the restaurant says that “Cafe Tropical Will not close or move out!”
