Mormon church ruins pictured in 2013

Glassell Park — The site of a Mormon church that was destroyed by a fire could soon host 38 small-lot homes, according to project plans filed with the Planning Department.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the 3800 block of Fletcher Drive next to the southbound 2 Freeway was heavily damaged in a fire in 2015, and later torn down.

A developer is now asking permission to demolish parking areas on that site, and to set up the 38 homes. The company behind the project, CCA Fletcher Partners LP, has ties to to an El Segundo developer called Comstock.

The brick church had been on that site for 25 years when it went ablaze on July 7, 2015, from a small brush and grass fire near the 2 Freeway. Damage to the church included the collapse of the roof and a threat to the structural integrity of the building. The fire was not declared knocked down until two hours and 14 minutes after it was reported.
