L.A. Derby Dolls get ready to roll to a new home in El Sereno

EL SERENO -- The all-female roller derby teams that make up the L.A. Derby Dolls league are tough and fast, but they are apparently no match for a wave of real estate development. That's why the Derby Dolls are moving from their long-time location in Echo Park to a new facility in El Sereno, the league announced today.

Nuzzled against the Union Pacific tracks in El Sereno, the colorfully saturated walls claimed by tagging crews line the alley behind Alhambra Avenue. The nearly mile of street art and tagging painted on backsides of warehouses, auto repair shops and rusting metal sheds face out to a select population of train operators and people walking the tracks. El Sereno residents pushing back on 43-home development

El Sereno – The hillside across from El Sereno Park is undeveloped, dense with trees and currently being sized up for 43 new homes. Newport Beach-based developer Clearwater Communities held a public outreach meeting on Wednesday night with residents of El Sereno to present their plans to grade parts of nearly five-acre site at the corner of Eastern Avenue and Lombardy Street. New hillside home development planned for El Sereno

A large hillside lot above Huntington Drive would be carved up to build 36 new homes if the city grants the necessary approvals. Applications have been filed with the city's Planning Department to subdivide the parcel at 2730 N. Onyx Street under the city's small-lot ordinance, which allows property owners to pack more single-family homes on to a site than would normally be permitted. Read More »
